|  | | Health care providers are in a unique position to help victims of abuse, if they know how to detect domestic violence and provide victims with referrals and support. But, too often, health care providers do not discuss abuse with their patients or screen patients for domestic violence. Fewer than ten percent of primary care physicians routinely screen patients for domestic violence during regular office visits, according to a study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1999.
Routine screening, support and referrals provided to victims of abuse by their health care providers are critical elements in the prevention and early intervention of violence risks. Asking your patients about potential violence in their lives is a wise use of resources, a necessary form of intervention and the very standard of care. By taking these steps, you can help decrease your patients' risk of additional poor health outcomes. By taking these steps, you will help save lives.
